Roger Gracie Academy HQ Review – The Legendary London Home of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Lives Up to Every Bit of the Hype

Introduction

As a travelling BJJ enthusiast always chasing the best mats, I couldn't visit London without making a pilgrimage to Roger Gracie Academy HQ in Hammersmith. Roger Gracie – 10-time IBJJF World Champion, absolute legend of the gi, and grandson of Carlos Gracie – runs what many call one of the premier academies in the world.

The rep is massive: ultra-technical Gracie fundamentals, a who's-who of black belt instructors, and an atmosphere that's somehow both elite and genuinely family-oriented. I booked a day pass in advance (as required), hopped the tube to Hammersmith station (literally steps away), and walked in ready to see if the reality matched the legend. Spoiler: it did, and then some.

Arrival and Check-In

Rolled up about 15 minutes early for a Gi fundamentals class. The entrance is on Glenthorne Road in a ground-floor spot called Glen House – unassuming from the street but once inside, you know you're somewhere special. Friendly reception staff greeted me right away, checked my booking, had me sign the waiver, and sorted the £35 day pass (unlimited classes for visitors, prices correct at the time of writing). Quick change in the clean locker rooms, gi on, and they pointed me toward the mats. No fuss, super welcoming from the jump. Note: book classes 48 hours ahead via their Mindbody portal, as spots can fill up in advance.

Facility Description

The academy is spacious and spotless – a big mat area that handles a good crowd without feeling cramped, plenty of room for technique drills and rolling PLUS another room adjacent which is a little smaller, but equally well maintained. Bright lighting, well-ventilated, and everything feels premium and maintained to a high standard. It's got that classic London urban vibe but with a calm, focused energy inside. Changing rooms and showers are tidy, and the whole place gives off a professional yet relaxed "this is where serious Jiu-Jitsu happens" feel. No gimmicks, just high-quality mats and an environment built for training.

A small technical note - I find that the type of mats varies across different BJJ gyms, at Roger Gracie Academy HQ, the mats are super smooth and therefore quite slippy/not much friction - this is great if you love leg entanglements and sliding around to hit angle son your opponents. If (like me) you are more used to mats with a bit more friction it can take a minute to get used to this - but once you get it you become much more mobile off your back versus what you might be expecting.

Class & Training Details

I jumped into a Gi class led by one of the senior black belts (the timetable is insane – classes running from 6am through evenings most days, plus weekends). The session started with a solid warm-up, then crystal-clear technique instruction in this case on how to do a triangle choke – the kind of detail-oriented teaching, broken down into forensic detail that makes you go "oh, that's why that works." The pace is methodical but intense, perfect for drilling fundamentals while still challenging higher belts.

Instructors and Notable Moments

The instructor lineup is stacked in this place: starting with the GOAT himself - Roger Gracie (4th degree black belt - read our profile of him here: https://www.thegentleartguide.com/post/roger-gracie-the-quiet-giant-of-brazilian-jiu-jitsu ) , his even more experienced and knowledgeable father Mauricio Motta Gomes (8th degree coral belt and absolute legend - here's our profile of him: https://www.thegentleartguide.com/post/mauricio-gomes-the-father-of-bjj-in-britain ), plus Bruno Zancaner, Kywan Gracie, and a roster of medal-winning black belts. Everyone teaches with patience and depth – fundamentals are king here, but the level is sky-high. During my visit, the black belt leading the class broke down details in a way that made sense for everyone from beginners to competitors. Post-class chats were encouraging, with people happy to share tips. It's the kind of place where you feel you're learning the "right" way to do Jiu-Jitsu.

Atmosphere

This is where RGA HQ really shines. Despite the elite pedigree, the energy I encountered was warm and family-like – no cliques, no posturing. Everyone from hobbyists to serious competitors was training together with respect and good vibes. It felt supportive yet driven: you'll get pushed, but you'll also get helped up and given pointers. The "big family" ethos they promote on their site feels real – relaxed, enjoyable, and drama-free. People travel from across London (and beyond) for this exact atmosphere.

What Others Say

Across Reddit, Google reviews, and visitor feedback, the consensus is clear: one of the best (if not the best) academies in London/Europe. People rave about the technical instruction, friendly staff and students, clean facilities, and the sheer volume of classes. Some note it's pricey for memberships and parking is a London nightmare, but visitors and drop-ins consistently call it worth every penny for the quality and experience. Common themes: "best place for fundamentals," "welcoming to all levels," "high-level without the ego."

The Gentle Art Guide Gym Score

- Technical level & quality of instruction: 5/5

- Atmosphere & vibe: 5/5

- Drop-in friendliness: 5/5

- Facility & mat space: 4.5/5

- Value (for a day pass at this level): 4.5/5

- Overall: 5/5

If you're serious about Jiu-Jitsu, this place delivers world-class training in a supportive environment. The only minor ding is the cost (day pass £35, but you're paying for legendary lineage and that includes as many classes as you have the energy for), and London logistics – but that's not the academy's fault!

The Gentle Art Guide Conclusion

Roger Gracie Academy HQ exceeded my high expectations. The technical depth, the welcoming family feel, the chance to train in the same room where a 10x world champ built his legacy – it's special. Whether you're a beginner polishing basics or a competitor sharpening your game, you'll leave better and buzzing. If you're in London or passing through, make the trip to Hammersmith. Book ahead, bring your gi, and soak it in. This is Gracie Jiu-Jitsu at its finest.

Highly recommended – check their site (rogergracie.com), timetable, and Instagram (@rogergracieacademy) for the latest. See you on the mats there someday soon!
