Ace BJJ (Ace Jiu Jitsu), Whitchurch, Shropshire is a solid local option for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling, run out of the Brownlow Centre on Claypit Street (SY13 1LF).

Coaching

The standout feature is the coaching. Lead coach Shaun is a black belt under Casey Jones (3rd Degree Black Belt and SBG UK Vice President) and one of the lead coaches at the well-regarded SBG Shropshire in Shrewsbury. He brings solid experience teaching both BJJ and wrestling, with a clear focus on helping students improve on and off the mats. He regularly supports students at competitions.

This connection to SBG Shropshire (which consistently earns strong feedback for technical quality and coaching) is a big plus for a smaller-town gym.

Classes & Atmosphere

Classes are explicitly beginner-friendly with an emphasis on fundamentals in a supportive environment — no experience required. They also run wrestling/grappling sessions that develop takedowns, control, and live rolling. Adult classes cater to all levels; kids’ classes are planned for the future.

Current timetable (as advertised):

  • Thursday: 18:00–20:00

  • Sunday: 09:00–11:00

They offer a free trial class (book via acebjj.co.uk or by messaging them).

At the time of writing a Friday night class has just been added - check out the Ace BJJ website/Instagram to find out more.

Location & Practicalities

Training at the Brownlow Community Centre makes it convenient for anyone in or around Whitchurch who doesn’t want the regular drive into Shrewsbury. Let;s be honest here, it's a temporary style setup, so the mats need to be laid down to get things going, but it only takes 5 minutes. And the coaching and training partners are very good.

Overall Impression: BJJ Gym Review: Ace BJJ, Whitchurch Shropshire

Ace BJJ fills a useful gap for North Shropshire/Whitchurch-area grapplers. You’re getting black-belt level instruction with a direct link to a strong SBG affiliate, in a low-pressure, fundamentals-focused setting that welcomes complete beginners. Class volume is currently limited (two sessions per week), so it suits people who want quality local training rather than a full multi-class-per-week academy timetable.
