STEALTH BJJ MANCHESTER (CHADDERTON) REVIEW
Stealth BJJ captures everything that’s great about Northern British jiu-jitsu. It’s a gym built on honest graft, technical clarity, zero ego, and a genuine community that wants every single person on the mats to improve. Founded in 2008 by 5th degree black belt Steve Campbell — one of the first British grapplers to earn his black belt and a pioneer who spent eight years training at Gracie Barra headquarters in Rio de Janeiro under Carlos Gracie Jr. — Stealth feels like the real deal. The mats are lived-in, the coaching is intentional, and the people have clearly built something meaningful together through years of shared rounds, shared laughs, and shared tough nights.
This isn’t a glossy, Instagram-optimised facility chasing trends. It’s a serious training environment that still manages to feel warm and welcoming the second you walk through the door.

LOCATION & FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Tucked away on Bourne Street in Chadderton (Oldham), just off Junction 22 of the M60, Stealth is remarkably easy to reach whether you’re local or passing through Greater Manchester. Free on-site parking removes any stress, and the industrial-unit setting immediately signals “proper gym” rather than commercial fitness centre.
Step inside and you’re greeted quickly and genuinely. No clipboard interrogation, no awkward hovering — just a straightforward welcome and a quick orientation. The space has high ceilings, excellent natural light, clean grey mats that stretch across generous areas, and the distinctive STEALTH branding on the walls. It feels bright, organised, and purposeful. The “Progress” banner visible in the training area perfectly sums up the mindset here: steady, consistent improvement over flashy short-term gains.
The atmosphere strikes that perfect Northern balance — warm but hardworking. There’s a seriousness to the training without any performative intensity. People drill with focus, ask thoughtful questions, and help each other refine details. When sparring begins, the room settles into that distinctive focused rhythm: tough but respectful rounds, partners who push you without trying to “win the gym,” and an overall sense that everyone is here to get better together.

COACHING & TRAINING QUALITY
This is where Stealth really shines. Head coach Steve Campbell’s extensive experience in Brazil brings a depth and authenticity that filters through the entire coaching team. Sessions are structured, concept-driven, and built around a clear syllabus rather than random technique-of-the-day classes. You get the distinct impression that the coaches have thought carefully about long-term student development, not just filling an hour.
Details matter here — and the corrections actually stick. Whether it’s posture in guard retention, grip fighting nuances, or angle management in passing, the feedback is precise, calm, and delivered in a way that builds understanding rather than just telling you what you’re doing wrong. The teaching style is patient and technical, emphasising why something works so you can adapt it to your own game.
Classes cater to all levels. Beginners receive step-by-step breakdowns in dedicated intro sessions (your first class is free), while more experienced grapplers benefit from deeper conceptual work and high-quality sparring. There are gi and no-gi options, plus a popular women’s-only class that creates a supportive space without sacrificing technical rigour. The room naturally mixes skill levels, and partners adjust intensity appropriately — exactly what every traveller hopes for.
Sparring rounds are honest, varied, and safe. You’ll get tested, pushed, and occasionally tapped, but always in an environment where safety and respect come first. Post-roll chats are common; the learning doesn’t stop when the timer beeps.
SAFETY, VIBE & CULTURE
Stealth has that classic Northern hospitality: friendly, grounded, quietly proud, and completely free of macho nonsense or cliques. New starters are supported, visitors are welcomed like temporary teammates, and experienced grapplers set the tone by training hard but respectfully. Women train in good numbers and clearly feel at home — both in mixed classes and the dedicated women’s sessions.
Safety is visibly prioritised. The mats are clean and well-maintained, the space is organised, and coaches keep a close eye on the room. There’s no chaos, no reckless ego-sparring, and a strong culture of tapping early and often. Hygiene standards are high, and the overall environment encourages smart, sustainable training rather than burnout or injury-chasing.
Promotions and stripe ceremonies happen regularly, and the joy in the room when someone levels up is genuine. It feels like a real community — people look out for each other on and off the mats.
FACILITIES
The facilities are clean, functional, and clearly maintained with pride. Multiple mat areas give plenty of space even on busy nights. Changing rooms and showers are organised and practical. Everything you need is exactly where it should be. It’s not a luxury gym with saunas and smoothie bars — it’s a serious training facility where the focus stays squarely on the art. The “run by people who care” feeling is obvious in every detail, from the spotless mats to the thoughtful layout.
TRAVELLER & DROP-IN FRIENDLINESS
For anyone passing through Greater Manchester or the North West, Stealth is an outstanding drop-in choice. Communication via Instagram or Facebook is straightforward, the welcome is warm and genuine, and you’re integrated into the session without fuss or fanfare. You won’t feel like a guest — you’ll feel like a temporary member of the team.
Whether you’re brand new to BJJ, a seasoned traveller looking for good rounds, or somewhere in between, the gym adapts. Beginners get guidance and appropriate partners. Experienced grapplers get challenging, high-quality rolls that sharpen their game. Solo travellers are looked after. It’s the kind of place that understands the value of visitors and treats them well — a rare and welcome trait.
I visited Stealth BJJ twice to write this review. Both times attending an Open Mat. This place does Open Mats like very few places you can find in the UK - I was one of about 60 people rolling on the mats at one session, and stayed from start to finish with no breaks, think I managed 12 rounds of sparring. Every one of the people I rolled with was friendly and welcoming, and also every one was better at Jiu Jitsu than me, but did not grind my face into the mats just because they could. Having visited the reportedly 'legendary' Open mats at places like Legion JJ in San Diego, would have to say that Stealth BJJ compares very well. For sure you will find a few more world champions on the mats at Legion, but as a 'hobbyist' drop in experience, Stealth BJJ was an equally awesome experience as visiting Legion, which says quite a lot!

OVERALL IMPRESSION
Stealth BJJ Chadderton is a standout example of what makes Northern jiu-jitsu special: community, humility, technical depth, and real hard work. It’s a gym built on genuine passion for the art rather than marketing or trends. Steve Campbell’s pioneering background gives it credibility, but the day-to-day culture is what keeps people coming back.
Whether you live locally, you’re visiting Manchester, or you’re road-tripping through the North West, Stealth is absolutely worth your time. The combination of structured coaching, respectful yet challenging training, excellent facilities, and that unmistakable warm Northern welcome creates something special.
It’s the kind of gym you leave thinking, “I’d train here regularly if I lived closer.” And in the world of BJJ drop-ins, that’s the highest compliment you can give.
