Legion American Jiu Jitsu (San Diego) review – The Legendary Sunday Open Mat Lives Up to the Hype
I was working in LA at a trade show and had the weekend free. When I asked around for where I could go and train at the weekend, San Diego kept coming up – it’s not exactly round the corner from LA, but I was repeatedly told to attend the open mat on Sunday at Legion American Jiu Jitsu, just north of S.D. So we headed south for the weekend and pulled into a parking lot which was kind of in the middle of nowhere – it’s about 15 miles North of downtown San Diego.
This spot, founded by Keenan Cornelius and run with a professional yet welcoming vibe, has built a reputation as one of the top academies in the country—and their weekly Sunday gathering is a big part of why.
The open mat happens every Sunday from 12pm to 2:30pm (no cancellations, even on major holidays like Christmas or New Year's), and it's been a San Diego tradition since 2019. Most remarkably bearing in mind the ridiculously fantastic experience on offer, there is no drop-in fee (at least on the day we visited). I rolled up, and were greeted warmly by the friendly and professional staff on the front desk, signed the waver and headed to the changing rooms.
On the way, the first clear observation is that this is a BIG facility, most BJJ gyms are relatively small for classes upto around max. 20-30 people rolling at any one time. This space was huge - —over 5,800 square feet of pristine mats—with plenty of space even when it was packed (we've heard and seen multiple reports of 100+ people, and attendance records pushing over 200 in the past). On the day I attended there were probably around 100 people rolling.
The space is very bright, airy, modern, and spotless, with that premium "American Jiu-Jitsu" feel that emphasizes freedom, high-level training, and good energy. The doors at the back were open to circulate air and stop things getting too sweaty.
What really sets this open mat apart is the incredible mix of people on the mats. You get a perfect blend: world-class black belts and champions (including recognizable names from competitions and instructionals) rolling alongside hobbyists, intermediates, and everyone in between. The Open Mat we went to featured at least 3 current world champions, as well as numerous high level competitors from young and wrestling based through to a guy half my size in his 60s who tied me up with his Spider Guard and made me feel both helpless and really stupid!
The Gi and No Gi crowds split roughly down the middle – I was on the Gi side – and I would say about 1/3rd of the people there were wearing Gis. The No Gi crowd were overall younger and more energetic.
One ultimate bonus to my trip was talking to a guy who beat the crap out of me with style, grace and humility about what a great experience this was. He started to point out the high level people in the room, and then he turned round and introduced me to Mr. Keenan Cornelius himself, owner of Legion, super high level competitor, innovator and disruptor. I went to shake his hand and he obliged accordingly, we then had a quick chat, and what I valued the most about that chat was that he was genuinely just there to roll and play around with his friends and training partners, he very politely made it clear that he was there to roll not to sell T shirts and instructionals – gotta respect that!
I found the the vibe at Legion AJJ to be electric but positive: maximum good vibes, excellent rounds, and a real feeling of camaraderie and community. People come from all over the area (and beyond) to cross-train, share different styles, and just enjoy the love for the art without the usual politics. It's welcoming to drop-ins, open to gi and no-gi rounds, and focused on fostering a bigger, drama-free San Diego jiu-jitsu scene. Whether you're a hobbyist chasing quality rolls or someone looking to test yourself against high-level training partners, it delivers.
OTHER PEOPLE’S EXPERIENCES AT LEGION HQ OPEN MAT
From what we've seen in reviews and online chatter (Yelp, Google, Reddit, YouTube clips – the usual places), the consensus is the same: huge turnout, friendly staff, insane competition level without attitude, and one of the best (if not the biggest) open mats in San Diego—maybe even anywhere. Visitors rave about the facility being legit, the rounds being challenging yet supportive, and leaving feeling motivated and a little sore in the best way.
THE GENTLE ART GUIDE GYM SCORE
I genuinely can’t imagine a better experience for a BJJ practitioner from Blue belt upwards. You won’t get many easy rounds, but if you’re humble, you’ll really enjoy the level of skills used to leave you defenceless!

THE GENTLE ART GUIDE CONCLUSION
Legion American Jiu Jitsu HQ's Sunday open mat is a real gem—professional, high-energy, and genuinely fun. It exceeded our expectations with the caliber of training partners, the welcoming environment, and the sheer quality of the experience. If you're in San Diego or passing through, make this a priority on your Sunday. Whether you're honing your game, building connections, or just want some of the best rolls around, you'll leave smiling (and probably planning your next visit). I can't wait to go back.
