Lake District BJJ Academy Review – Cumbria's Pioneering Jiu-Jitsu Hub Delivers Community, Skills, and Fun in Spades
As a travelling, but lacking in skill BJJ enthusiast always on the hunt for training, I was on holiday in the North of England’s stunning Lake District. I managed to sneak away from the family and to drop in to training at Lake District BJJ Academy in Kendal. Established in 2011 as Cumbria's first BJJ club, this spot has built a solid rep for blending top-notch instruction with a welcoming, community-focused vibe. Head coach Sam Kaye, a seasoned black beltemphasizes "Jiu-Jitsu for everyone. I reached out ahead for a drop-in, drove along to Kendal (via the town’s inexplicable one way system) and made my way to their unit on Parkside Road. Parking spaces were not entirely abundant truth be told, but once inside I loved it!
Arrival and Check-In
The academy is tucked into Unit 1b on Parkside Road, a no-frills industrial spot. The staff were super friendly from the get-go – I had sorted out a drop-in fee (contact them for current rates, but when I visited, the cost to drop in and train was £10). Changing rooms are basic but clean, with enough shower space. I headed upstairs to the mat space above a weigh training and fitness gym owned by the same family. As you would expect in this part of the world, there was no pretension, things just don’t work that way in the North of England!
Facility Description
The setup is compact yet functional – a dedicated mat space that's well-maintained and spacious enough for a solid group without feeling overcrowded. It's got that practical gym vibe with good ventilation, bright lighting, and quality mats that provide decent grip for both Gi and No-Gi work. There’s a linked chain section for those who like to practise their MMA skills, and a fairly large mat area which can easily hold 30 or 40 people rolling.
Instructors and Notable Moments
The coaching team shines here, led by head instructor Sam Kaye who's got years of experience. During my visit, Sam's patient explanation of a submission chain clicked for everyone, from newbies to regulars. A standout moment was chatting with locals about their competition prep – the academy's team nabbed second place at the Manchester Open back in 2022, showing their competitive edge without the ego. It's clear the instructors foster growth, with one-on-one pointers that left me with actionable improvements. Above all the chat is light hearted and humorous.
Atmosphere
This is Lake District BJJ's secret sauce: a tight-knit, supportive community where everyone from hobbyists to competitors trains with respect and encouragement. Felt like no cliques – just good vibes, laughter between rounds, and a family-like feel that extends to their youth team. It's inclusive and drama-free, drawing folks from across Cumbria for the welcoming energy. As one visitor noted on Reddit, it's a "good place" with weekend camps that build bonds. You'll get challenged, but always with a helping hand – perfect for building confidence in a scenic, low-key setting.
What Others Say
Feedback across Google (5/5 from 27 reviews), Reddit, and testimonials echoes the positivity: raves for the friendly instructors, inclusive environment, and life-changing benefits like anxiety management and fitness gains. Parents love the kids' program for teaching life skills through play, while adults highlight the escape from daily stress and weight loss perks. Common praises: "top-notch coaching," "engaging and fun," and "great for beginners." Minor notes include the need to contact for exact schedules, but overall, it's hailed as a standout in the regional scene.
The Gentle Art Guide Gym Score:

- Drop-in friendliness: 5/5
- Facility & mat space: 4.5/5
- Value (for drop-ins and memberships): 5/5
- Overall: 5/5
This academy punches above its weight, delivering high-quality training in a supportive space. The only small knocks are the parking was a bit limited, but no drama, we parked along the road just fine.
The Gentle Art Guide Conclusion
Lake District BJJ Academy more than met my expectations as a traveller's find. The blend of solid fundamentals, community spirit, and that Cumbrian warmth makes it a must-visit for anyone in the area. Whether you're polishing basics, prepping for comps, or introducing kids to the art, you'll leave sharper and smiling. If you're near Kendal or exploring the Lakes, book a spot, grab your gi, and dive in. This is grassroots Jiu-Jitsu done right.
Highly recommended – check their site (lakesbjj.co.uk), timetable, and Instagram (@lakesbjj) for updates.
See you on the mats there someday soon!
