How to Choose Your First BJJ Gym (Without Getting Burned)

Choosing the right Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym is one of the most important decisions you will make in your training journey. A good gym will support your growth, keep you safe, and help you stay consistent. A bad gym can lead to injuries, frustration, or quitting altogether.

Here is a clear guide to choosing the right gym from day one.

1. Check the Instructor’s Credentials

Look for legitimate lineage, experience, and a reputation for good teaching rather than just competition success.

2. Evaluate the Culture

A gym’s culture determines whether you will enjoy training. Look for friendly students, respectful sparring, and a welcoming atmosphere.

3. Look for Cleanliness and Hygiene

Clean mats, tidy changing rooms, and clear hygiene rules are essential.

4. Assess the Class Structure

Good gyms have structured classes with warm-ups, technique, drilling, and controlled sparring.

5. Watch a Class Before Joining

Observe how the coach teaches, how students behave, and how sparring is conducted.

6. Avoid Red Flags

These include cult-like behaviour, unsafe rolling, no warm-ups, or instructors who never roll with students.

7. Consider Location and Schedule

Convenience matters. If the gym is too far away, you will struggle to stay consistent.

8. Ask About Trial Classes

Most reputable gyms offer free trials so you can test the environment.

9. Look for a Mix of Training Partners

You want a range of sizes, skill levels, and training styles.

10. Trust Your Instincts

If something feels off, it probably is.

ABOUT THE GENTLE ART GUIDE & JIMMY ROSE

I'm Jimmy Rose - and I'm a lifelong martial artist. My first martial arts lesson was way back in 1984, following the massive success of the original 'The Karate Kid' movie, I took a bus across town to try Karate. I ended up in a Judo class by mistake, got concussed by landing on my head a few minutes in and I have been loving martial arts and combat sports ever since. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is for me the ultimate combat sport and martial art. It is both endlessly fun, but also endlessly challenging in so many ways. I started this website to share my love and knowledge of this noble (Gentle!) art, especially with white belt beginners. Don't take what we write here as the gospel - please listen to your instructor and use your own care and due diligence. Jiu Jitsu is one of the most rewarding things you can do - and so many of the benefits are not to be found in the actual techniques you learn, even though BJJ techniques have been heavily pressure tested and therefore do work - the trick is to put in the time to discover what works best for your body and your ability to absorb and execute multi-component techniques - enjoy your BJJ journey, and we hope to be a valuable resource for your along the way ...OSS!!!
