Gym Visit Review: Equipe Fabrício BJJ — Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro

If you are training in Rio and looking for a gym that feels both genuinely local and welcoming to visitors, Equipe Fabrício BJJ in Copacabana strikes an excellent balance between authentic Brazilian lineage and traveller-friendly accessibility. It is the kind of place where you can step off the bustling streets of one of Rio’s most iconic neighbourhoods and immediately sense you are entering a serious academy rooted in the city’s rich jiu-jitsu heritage, while still feeling at ease as an international visitor.
First impressions upon arriving are positive and straightforward. The academy is located just off Avenida Nossa Senhora de Copacabana, making it relatively easy to find even for first-time visitors to the area. It sits tucked above street level, with the constant energy and hum of the city audible below. Once inside, the space reveals itself as clean, compact, and unmistakably Brazilian. White mats cover the floor, framed photos of Fabrício Martins and other lineage icons adorn the walls, and there is that familiar faint aroma of disinfectant mixed with honest sweat, the unmistakable sign of a gym that sees regular, dedicated use. The overall atmosphere strikes a humble yet professional tone. Newcomers are greeted with warm smiles rather than curious stares. While English is spoken enough to help visitors get by, Portuguese remains the dominant language on the mats, which only adds to the authentic immersion into Brazilian jiu-jitsu culture.

The lineage and teaching style here run deep. Fabrício Martins is a respected coral belt (7th degree black belt) carrying forward the Carlson Gracie tradition, and that old-school Rio DNA is clearly evident in every class. His lineage is: Mitsuyo Maeda -> Carlos Gracie -> Reyson Gracie -> Osvaldo Alves -> Fabricio Martins.
The instruction emphasises pressure, control, and positional dominance over flashy, modern sequences. You can expect a strong focus on core fundamentals such as guard passing, top pressure, and grip fighting. It is an ideal environment to reconnect with the classic Brazilian jiu-jitsu values of discipline, respect, and consistent hard work on the mats.
Training experiences at Equipe Fabrício BJJ are welcoming for drop-ins. The visitor day pass fee when we visited was 150 reals (c. $30 USD/£22/€25). Classes are scheduled throughout the day, including morning, lunchtime, and evening slots, with additional sessions on Saturdays for those seeking extra mat time. There are no overly strict gi colour requirements, though clean gear and punctuality are standard expectations. The structure of each class is clear and effective. Warm-ups tend to be short yet functional, preparing the body without unnecessary fluff. Technique instruction is delivered in a straightforward manner that is easy to follow and repeat. Sparring rounds strike a good balance, remaining competitive while staying respectful. Locals will certainly test you and push your limits, but they do so in a way that builds rather than breaks. You will find yourself rolling with a diverse mix of seasoned local practitioners, fellow travellers, and the occasional competitor, all under the attentive oversight of Fabrício and his senior students.

We attended a session taught by Professor Joaquim Malta, a 6th degree black belt with a true wealth of knowledge and experience. His class started with 10 minutes of old skool self-defence moves which are clearly designed to be simple and to work for anyone regardless of size, age or athletic qualities. Modern day BJJ seems to have become so sport oriented, but we’re always interested in self defense applications ( in fact we have our own self defence website in case you’re interested: https://www.realworldselfdefensetips.com/) Professor Malta’s self defence techniques included a really nice standing ‘Americana’ or ‘keylock’ response to being grabbed on the collar. Professor Malta took time to ask about the experience and Instructors of our team members – he was delighted to hear our Instructor learnt under Roger Gracie, as he is a good friend of Roger Gracie’s legendary father – Maurico Motta Gomes (see our profile of Professor Mauricio Gomes here: https://www.thegentleartguide.com/post/mauricio-gomes-the-father-of-bjj-in-britain ).
Drop-in students at Equipe Fabricio often share positive feedback about their time here. Many remark on the super friendly atmosphere, noting how quickly they felt welcomed like family. Others highlight the tough but respectful rolls that challenge them without crossing into discomfort. Several visitors have praised it as an ideal lunchtime training spot, especially convenient for those based in Copacabana. Here’s a couple of real reviews from visitors:
“Authentic Rio BJJ. Clean mats, strong pressure game, and the locals push you in a good way. Felt like a real part of the academy after just a few sessions.”
“Tough but respectful training. The professor and seniors make you feel at home even if you are just visiting from abroad. Great lunchtime classes with solid fundamentals.”

For travellers considering a visit, a few practical details are worth keeping in mind - while classes are conducted primarily in Portuguese, the instructors are usually happy to offer translations or clarifications when needed. Expect traditional academy etiquette, including bowing when stepping on and off the mats, handshakes, and a quiet respect shown toward the professor and senior belts.
Here’s the timetable as it was at the time of writing this article, please check with the academy directly to check the latest timetable to avoid disappointment in case things have changed:

Overall, Equipe Fabrício BJJ stands out as a true Rio academy. It is neither a tourist-oriented operation nor an overly polished boutique gym. Instead, it is a genuine place where you come to train hard, sweat profusely, and absorb knowledge from locals who live and breathe the art every day. If you find yourself staying in Copacabana and seeking an authentic slice of Brazilian jiu-jitsu culture, this academy is highly recommended as a worthwhile stop on your journey. It delivers that satisfying combination of challenge, community, and connection to the roots of the gentle art.
