BJJ INSTRUCTIONAL REVIEW: FOUNDATIONS OF BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU BY BERNARDO FARIA

Book cover: Foundations of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu by Bernardo Faria, showing grapplers in blue and white gis on a gold-brown background.

If you are brand new to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, returning after time away, or coaching beginners, Foundations of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by Bernardo Faria is the clear, structured roadmap you have been looking for. Bernardo Faria, a five-time IBJJF Black Belt World Champion, takes the overwhelming chaos of early training and turns it into a calm, logical learning path that builds real understanding from day one. This is not a flashy highlight reel of advanced moves. It is a complete blueprint for grasping how Jiu-Jitsu actually works, how positions connect, why pressure and control beat speed, and how to think like a grappler instead of just memorizing techniques.

Bernardo is famous for his simple teaching style, and it shines brightest here. Every lesson moves at a deliberate pace designed for retention, with crystal-clear explanations and attention to the tiny details that separate working techniques from frustrating failures. The result is an instructional that gives beginners confidence and gives coaches a ready-made framework for teaching fundamentals the right way.

WHY FUNDAMENTALS MATTER MORE THAN YOU THINK

Bernardo often shares that he was never the most athletic or explosive competitor, yet he won five world titles, including the Absolute division, by mastering fundamentals better than almost anyone. This instructional teaches exactly those basics, the same ones he has used since his blue belt days and still relies on today. The core message is simple but powerful: if your foundation is weak, everything else will crumble. Strong basics make advanced techniques possible later and keep you safe and effective right now, no matter your age, fitness level, or athletic ability.

DETAILED CONTENT BREAKDOWN

The course is organized into six volumes that flow logically from standing to ground work, guard play, passing, top control, and submissions. Bernardo focuses on principles and concepts rather than isolated tricks, showing exactly how each piece fits into a bigger picture.

Standing and takedown fundamentals cover posture, grip fighting, double leg and single leg entries, plus classic throws like Harai Goshi and O Goshi. These are taught with safety and control in mind, perfect for beginners who need reliable ways to get the fight to the ground without relying on explosiveness.

Guard work starts with closed guard essentials, including the scissor sweep, pendulum sweep, and key details like pulling your opponent forward so their base is light and their hips are in the right position. From there it progresses into spider guard sweeps, triangle setups, balloon sweeps, and tripod variations, always emphasizing grip, leverage, and timing over strength or flexibility.

Half guard and transitions appear naturally, with knee shield basics, bridges for retention or sweeping, and simple ways to move between positions. Passing is covered thoroughly with Toreando, double under, and knee slice options, plus clear posture and control details for top closed guard and half guard.

Top position finishes strong with side control, knee on belly, mount, and high-percentage submissions like armbars, Kimuras, Americanas, and cross chokes from multiple angles. Defensive awareness and escapes are woven throughout, teaching students how to stay calm, recognize danger early, and move intelligently instead of panicking.

The entire progression reinforces the classic Jiu-Jitsu truth of position before submission while showing how transitions actually happen in real time.

TEACHING STYLE AND PRODUCTION QUALITY

Bernardo delivers every technique slowly and methodically with excellent camera angles and multiple demonstrations. He repeatedly highlights the small adjustments, the inches that make or break a sweep, and the conceptual reasons behind each movement. This makes the material ideal for self-study or for reviewing after academy classes. Production follows the standard clear and functional BJJ Fanatics approach, nothing flashy but consistently easy to follow and rewatch.

WHAT WE LOVED

Crystal-clear explanations and perfect pacing for beginners and returning students.

Strong conceptual focus that builds genuine understanding instead of rote memorization of moves.

Logical progression where each section naturally builds on the previous one.

Timeless content that never goes out of style and continues to serve grapplers at every level.

Excellent value as one of Bernardo best-selling instructionals, packed with practical details that fix common mistakes early.

Ideal supplement for academy training or a complete standalone foundation for those training at home or with limited class time.

WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED

Production remains functional rather than cinematic, which is typical for this style of instructional.

More experienced grapplers may find the pace deliberately slow, though that is exactly what makes it effective for its target audience.

Limited live rolling footage, which some learners prefer for seeing techniques in dynamic context.

WHO THIS INSTRUCTIONAL IS PERFECT FOR

Complete beginners who want a structured, confidence-building start without feeling overwhelmed.

White and blue belts who want to solidify or rebuild their fundamentals with better details.

Coaches seeking a clear, organized teaching framework for new students.

Older or returning grapplers who need to relearn the basics safely and effectively.

Anyone who believes that understanding why Jiu-Jitsu works is more important than rushing into advanced systems.

It is not aimed at competitors already chasing high-level guard passing or leg lock meta. Those practitioners will likely find more value in Bernardo specialized series instead.

Foundations of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by Bernardo Faria is an outstanding resource that delivers exactly what its title promises. Bernardo strips the art down to its essential mechanics and mindset, creating the kind of instructional that builds lasting confidence rather than confusion. Whether you are stepping onto the mats for the first time, returning after a break, or responsible for teaching others, this course provides a rock-solid base that will support your entire Jiu-Jitsu journey.

If you want to understand the art properly from the beginning or help others do the same, this is one of the most valuable investments you can make. Pair it with consistent drilling and live training, and the results will compound for years.

RATING: 9.5 / 10 for beginners, white belts, returning grapplers, and anyone focused on building a strong foundation.

ABOUT THE GENTLE ART GUIDE & JIMMY ROSE

I'm Jimmy Rose - and I'm a lifelong martial artist. My first martial arts lesson was way back in 1984, following the massive success of the original 'The Karate Kid' movie, I took a bus across town to try Karate. I ended up in a Judo class by mistake, got concussed by landing on my head a few minutes in and I have been loving martial arts and combat sports ever since. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is for me the ultimate combat sport and martial art. It is both endlessly fun, but also endlessly challenging in so many ways. I started this website to share my love and knowledge of this noble (Gentle!) art, especially with white belt beginners. Don't take what we write here as the gospel - please listen to your instructor and use your own care and due diligence. Jiu Jitsu is one of the most rewarding things you can do - and so many of the benefits are not to be found in the actual techniques you learn, even though BJJ techniques have been heavily pressure tested and therefore do work - the trick is to put in the time to discover what works best for your body and your ability to absorb and execute multi-component techniques - enjoy your BJJ journey, and we hope to be a valuable resource for your along the way ...OSS!!!
